| Our all-new top of the line torch height controller (THC)
reads the voltage present in the plasma cutter arc, which varies with the distance of the
torch tip from the work. Based on subtile changes in that voltage, the THC
continuously makes minute adjustments to maintain the correct tip-to-work distance. The torch lowers until the torch contacts the material, where a slight increase in torque demands upon the motor tells the system to start the arc process. The torch backs off approximately 1/4" while the arc is initiated, and then descends to the cutting height. When the cut has been completed, the torch rises approximately 3 1/2" while it moves to the next piercing point. The torch lowers again, and the process is repeated until the entire plate has been processed. Both the arc initiation distance and the cutting distance are fully adjustable. A display on the front of the control box shows the arc voltage at any given time. The THC also has a manual jog mode, in which a toggle switch enables you to control the upward and downward movement of the torch, such as when changing consumables. The end of the torch is not obstructed by proximity sensors or the like, making electrode and nozzle replacement a breeze. Since it is the end of the torch itself that provides the torch height information, rather than sensors that are offset from the torch tip, it is possible to follow more exaggerated changes in the surface of the material. The torch will actually follow the edge of tubing or pipe of reasonable diameter. The THC carries a 1 year manufacturer's warranty against defects in workmanship. |
